Aging in place and enjoying independence is something that many seniors eagerly anticipate and hope for following retirement. The comfort of a familiar place and the freedom and flexibility that accompanies it are huge factors in the positive outlook of aging adults. But aging at home can come with unique challenges – particularly physical and cognitive ones which may become more apparent as the years go on. Even family members or friends serving as caregivers may not be able to identify potential hazards.

That’s why a home safety assessment is absolutely imperative. Our Occupational Therapist from Landis at Home can complete a thorough assessment of your environment, identify hazards, and even help recommend changes to ensure maximum safety and comfortability. If you haven’t yet had a professional home assessment completed, here are some things our team can recommend to help make your environment safer and more accommodating for your situation.

  • Eliminate fall hazards. This is one of the chief concerns in the homes of aging adults. Practically anything can become a trip or fall hazard: wires, laundry baskets, ottomans, plants, area rugs, or piles of books. Our team can help you declutter and brainstorm how to rectify other issues, such as tacking down rug corners or running wires along the wall rather than across a room.
  • Improve lighting. Dim rooms and hallways may become potential hazards even in a familiar place. Our team can make recommendations for these changes, such as brighter lightbulbs and nightlights which can help increase visibility.
  • Make the bathroom accessible. Many bathrooms used by aging adults need additional safety features, such as support bars installed by the toilet and tub and even potential remodels so that a senior does not need to step over the high side of a bathtub to access the shower. Our team can make recommendations for experts to assist in these changes.
  • Ensure there are safety features throughout the home, such as smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms, fall detection devices, and chair lifts, if needed. Our team can make recommendations for professionals to provide these services.

If you desire to age in place in the comfort and familiarity of your own home, it’s a good idea to get a home safety assessment to ensure that any hazards are mitigated. Contact Landis at Home today for more information.
