A Journey Through Care – Chuck & Lourene’s Story

(Charles) Chuck and Lourene were married 60 years and lived a full, joyful life together. Lourene was a Registered Nurse – BSN at Boston College and hospice nurse. Chuck was an executive in the non-profit field for many years before they both retired. Lourene was diagnosed with a rare type brain tumor in her mid-50s. However, her long-term prognosis was not encouraging.

Lourene surprised them! She continued nursing, reading, caring for others including their four sons, and living life. However, she did experience some health changes.

“The treatment for the tumor affected her frontal lobe which then affected her memory and some of her processing,” Chuck shared.

“We were Pathways instructors and that’s how we became familiar with Landis Homes. Once we moved in, Lourene’s health began declining further and we needed the assistance of Landis at Home. The caregivers at Landis at Home became like family. They gave Lourene care to complement what I could give, giving us another five years of aging in place. I don’t think anyone understands the full, comprehensive services of Landis at Home until they experience the need for them. The care they gave wasn’t a service, it was a ministry.”

“Being able to support Lourene and Chuck’s desire to stay together and age in place as long as possible was an honor. Starting with just a little assistance and then increasing as Lourene’s needs changed, helped give Chuck respite and assistance with needed tasks. The Landis at Home team developed relationships with both Lourene and Chuck. They developed routines for care that helped Lourene know what to expect so she could participate to her fullest capacity for as long as possible.  It was a pleasure for our team to work beside Chuck, who was a loving and dedicated caregiver, to support Lourene and help meet her needs,” Michele Sipel, Director of Landis at Home, said.

Eventually, Hospice recommended Lourene move to Healthcare, and their loving family, the Landis at Home team, the Hospice care team, the Healthcare team, and many others came together to coordinate her move.

“We had the support we needed during the process, especially among our family. As sick as Lourene was, I am grateful for the five years we shared here together. I’m also grateful for the common culture shared by those who give care at Landis Homes, especially in Hospice and Healthcare. There’s a fluidity of movement, regardless of assigned duties, to meet the needs of the residents. My comfort is that she isn’t suffering any longer and although I miss her, I feel her love and presence strongly,” Chuck said.

Lourene went to heaven in March 2024. Chuck continues to share about Lourene, her life, and their experiences moving through different levels of care. This is one way he honors her memory and recognizes those who want to help their loved ones age with dignity.
